Let the games begin!

While watching the Olympic opening ceremony this weekend, I made mad progress on my Nutkin sock for the Ravelympics. Since knitting's not an official sport, Ravelry's hosting the Knitting Olympics in spirit of the games. You choose a project, cast on at the start of the opening ceremony, and then post your finished project by the closing ceremony seventeen days later. Although the cuff's a bit tricky if you don't know where to pick up the stitch to fold it over, the pattern repeat's incredibly logical and a breeze to memorize. I'm almost finished with the leg!

Happy WWKIP Day!

Happy World Wide Knitting in Public Day WWKIP! I left the gloomy fog behind this morning and headed east to Union Square in San Francisco to knit in solidarity. After ripping out the heel three times on my bright purple "baby cable" sock (my second pair ever!), I finally figured out a way to decrease before making the heel flap so that the heel and gusset will fit my small foot while allowing the sock to fit over my leg. So I worked on the gusset decrease while soaking up the sunshine and chatting with some fellowRavelers.

Knitting this portion of the sock reminds me of rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time. I have to remember to do the cable every forth row, but I have to decrease every other row to make the gusset. Lots of things to remember to do at the same time!

Stitches West!

Well, kids, it's that time of year for Sitches West!, an amazing knitting convention in Santa Clara. I met up with a dear friend and rubbed elbows with knitterati such as Casey and Jess from Ravelry, Cookie A., and Vickie Howell. I also attended a free mini-workshop on felting and a touched skeins of yarn to my heart's content.

Of course, I came back with a nice loot and have officially come out of my knitting funk. Highlights include a Ravelry totebag, two gorgeous skeins of Solo yarn from Brooks Farm, two skeins of fingering weight yarn from Claudia Handpainted Yarns, my first skein of Socks that Rock, and a humongous helping of superwash Merino from Tess Designer Yarns. My fingers are already itching to cast on....
