Are you a worried knitter?

This feature on NPR's Marketplace show today spells the doom of local yarn stores across the nation. Apparently people have less money to spend on yarn in the current recession resulting in a drop in business at yarn stores. Oh, and the knitting fad is on it's way out too. Hmmmmmmmmm, did they look at Ravelry? My weekly knitting group has actually grown since we formed on that site.

The article also states that the knitting renaissance began after September 11th, because "worried women knit." Do I look like a "worried woman"? I knit, because it combines color, texture, creativity, and obsessive details. I knit, because it's a productive use of my time, and it provides the ultimate way to tell someone you love them by giving them a handmade gift. Just because I'm not shelling out $25 for sock yarn does not mean I'm not knitting!

Oh, and they misspell "purl" in the title.

hmm, that was interesting.
just like with many fads, i'm sure knitting will have booms and busts all through time. just because my hipster friends don't knit anymore doesn't mean knitting is dying or anything.

and yeah, hello, ravelry? there are so many people out there creating and ravelry grows every day! i don't think these people did their research.

i still keep spending money on yarn despite the recession. i think it's because i'm addicted. :P i support both online and local yarn stores, and i spend about $100 a month on yarn. (now that i type it out, it seems like a lot. eek.)

i am also not a worried knitter. when i'm worried, i can't knit! or pearl! :D
